Help Bring Coming Out: The Musical to Life

A Story for Us, About Us, and Powered by Us.

Coming Out: The Musical is an original, heart-stirring production that gives voice to what so many in the LGBTQIA+ community have lived, feared, hidden — and survived.

It’s raw, honest, and unafraid to tackle the hard truths of identity, acceptance, bullying, family conflict, and love.

But this story doesn’t end at the page — we need your help to put it on its feet.

We’re raising funds to support the developmental workshop that will bring this musical to life with integrity, care, and community at its heart.

Your donation will help us:

  • Pay queer-identifying and allied artists, writers, and performers who are telling these stories authentically.

  • Hire an experienced and inclusive creative team: director, choreographer, designers, and music director.

  • Rent rehearsal and performance space for our developmental workshop.

  • Record demo tracks that bring the music to life.

  • Print scripts, materials, and provide tech support for future performances and submissions.

This is more than a musical — it’s a chance to reflect our truth on stage, in our voices, for our community. It’s a story we wish we had growing up, and one that today’s LGBTQIA+ youth desperately need to see.

Every dollar raised helps amplify queer voices and create space for healing, conversation, and celebration.

Help us build a stage where every identity can take the spotlight.

Thank you for helping us write this next chapter — with pride.

About Coming Out: The Musical

Coming Out: The Musical is a raw, heartfelt, and uplifting story of self-discovery, resilience, and acceptance. Set in a suburban high school, the show follows Jake, a 17-year-old boy grappling with his sexuality in a world that often feels unkind and unforgiving. Through powerful songs and deeply emotional scenes, the musical shines a light on the challenges of coming out, the complexities of relationships, and the courage it takes to embrace one’s true self.

Act 1
The story begins with Jake navigating life as a high school student, dealing with bullies, a strained relationship with his father Luke, and the immense pressure to fit in. His best friend Abigail offers unwavering support, while his mother June senses her son is struggling but can’t quite figure out why.

In an attempt to deflect rumors about his sexuality, Jake asks Angela, a popular and kind-hearted classmate, to be his girlfriend. Though Angela accepts, Jake’s plan only adds to his inner turmoil. Meanwhile, Chase, the school’s star wrestler, fights his own battle with identity, using Jake as a scapegoat for his anger and confusion. The tension culminates in a cruel betrayal on the school bus, leaving Jake hurt and humiliated. Act 1 ends with Jake questioning his will to keep going.

Act 2
The second act begins with Jake at his lowest, contemplating suicide but ultimately deciding to push forward. He creates an online profile to find someone who might understand him and meets Mark, a confident young man living in a nearby town. Their connection provides Jake a momentary escape but also leads to complications.

Back at school, Jake confesses the truth to Angela, who feels betrayed but eventually forgives him after Abigail explains his struggles. Jake’s coming out leads to a climactic confrontation with his father, who refuses to accept him. Meanwhile, Chase and his friends brutally attack Jake, forcing Chase to confront his own demons.

The turning point comes when Chase finds Jake at his most vulnerable and opens up about his own struggles with identity, stopping Jake from ending his life. The two find a tentative understanding, realizing they are more alike than they ever imagined.

In the final scenes, Jake’s courage inspires his classmates, including Angela, Abigail, and even Chase, to rally around him in a show of support. The musical concludes with “It’s Okay to Be You,” a powerful anthem celebrating individuality and the importance of love and acceptance.
